The. Roots.

If you know me, you know I've been a die heart fan of this group since the mid-nineties. It's the first thing I tell you after my name (joke). In a time frame when everyone was bumping their favorite No Limit artist, I was soaking in the rhythmic vibes of The Legendary Roots Crew. Weird for a twelve year old right?

My Roots album purchases began in a pre-digital world, so this meant I had to play the couple of cd's, and tapes I owned over and over.. and over. This is my explanation for knowing all lyrics, ad libs, and random comments on "Do you want more?!".

If I had any complaints for my childhood favorite group (1st Roots, 2nd Wu-Tang, 3rd A Tribe Called Quest), it would be the revolving door that the group's supporting musicians enter and exit. All and all, I am pleased The Roots are receiving their just acclaim.

In the shadow of Egypt’s mess, we have our own domestic issues. Here in America we have luxuries that Egyptians can only dream of. American’s have all the opportunity. Right? It’s the American dream. Right?

The irony of our esteemed standard of living is that our superior bell and whistles drown out our social issues. Sure these issues are addressed, just not at the root. In the mist of Chicago’s continual senseless violence, I can’t help but to consider if everyone accounted for their own child; our neighborhoods would be safe.

4 Keep Sake

In an age where consumption is king, I tend to preserve select items. Which in-turn causes me to consume less. For example; I still own both my baseball glove from third grade, and most of my prized basketball card collection: which includes over twenty Michael Jordan cards.

This "gotta have something new" synergy extends to all markets from cars, to phones (thanks Steve), to fashion. As far as fashion goes, everyone in my age range is a self-proclaimed "sneaker head". Or at least that's how it seems. How is everybody a head?

Who cares how many pair of dunks you own, if YOU don't like them. Its important to grab selections that are relevant for your cypher. Here are a couple examples of how I've lived out this philosophy.

I own a pair of Havana Joe's boots which I purchased in 2002. They only get "bumped" for beer runs when its cold and wet, further persevering my newer boot purchases. These joints are super scuffed, but are the "jordan retro" of boots to me. In High School owning a pair of these meant you were ether "nickel and dimming", or you had a legal hustle. I wear them with conviction.

My red and white Air Force One's (2001) purpose is room decoration. I wear them maybe one or twice a year, the extensive yellowing around the soles prevents them from hardly ever leaving the shoe rack. The only reason I am holding on to this pair is due to the "Chi-Town" stitching on the outer heel of both shoes. "If you forget where you come from you're never make it where you're going", these shoes help me remember.

Yes, I fall victim to today's overwhelming marketing confederacies. I guess I'm comforted in the ability to say "no" just as quick as I say "yes", when new toys are flashed in front of my eyes.

Let go of the things that you don't need anymore, this prevents you from being an applicable prospect for A&E's Hoarders. However, it pays to keep some things. Who knows maybe one day you will be able to demand 5,000 racks for your keep sake.

First things 1st

I could not resist the itch to jump-start this blogging venture with a music related post. I listen to music like some watch television, it gets me through the day. In college I couldn't complete an assignment with-out something playing on itunes. Fifteen minutes into starting a last minute paper and I would find my self using google search like an old record shop sells attendant. With a strong university bandwidth, I would end my schoolwork sessions with about a paragraph worth of paper material and five new downloaded albums.

While you can expect to find a lot of music on organicdialouge, it is not an album review site. Thats what heavy weights like whatsinmyheadphones, and blackouthiphop are for. However, I will post joints that move me, as I hear them. Below are a few visuals that have touched me, including my favorite Summer 10' joint: "Nothing but us". Brought to you by the good folks at CreativeControl.

As I listen to my new found music manna; I reflect on the popular argument that hip hop is the cause of the high amounts of violence, and the subjection of black women. I disagree with that agreement for a number of reasons, but I'll save that argument for another post. I will say the amount of music videos that use naked women as props has drastically decreased. Or maybe I'm not exposed to the material because my B.E.T. consumption has drastically decreased in recent years.

Ether way there IS good holistic material available, with less smokescreens. Coodie & Chike are "doing their thing" over at  CreativeControl. All of the material is definitely not rated G, yet the placement always seems purposeful. I guess it helps when you have a guys like Ski Beats lacing the backdrops, and Dame Dash to govern recruitment.
